چکیده

Many structural components can be regarded as waveguides. They are uniform in one direction so that the cross section of the waveguide has the same physical and geometric properties at all points along the axis of the waveguide. In this paper a method is presented to calculate the forced response of such a structure using a combination of wave and finite element (FE) approaches. The method involves post-processing a conventional, but low order, FE model in which the mass and stiffness matrices are typically found using a conventional FE package. A section of the waveguide is meshed and the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the resulting transfer matrix found. The eigenvectors form a set of basis functions for the analysis of the structure as a whole, allowing the global dynamic stiffness matrix to be built easily and then the forced response to be calculated very efficiently. The main advantage of the approach over the alternative waveguide/FE approach often termed the spectral FE method, is that conventional FE packages can be used to form the stiffness and mass matrices so that structures with complex geometries or material distributions can be analysed with relative ease. To demonstrate the efficacy of the method examples of the forced response for a finite beam and plate-strip are presented. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Wave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis

Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...

A Modified Finite Element Method for ‘Analysis of Finite Periodic Structures

A modified finite element method with new solving algorithm is proposed to analyze electromagnetic problems of finite periodic structures. Dielectric-loaded parallel-plate waveguides with rectangular and triangular dielectric gratings are tackled as an example of the present approach. Numerical results are checked by the self-convergence test and by comparing with those obtained by other method...

Appropriate Loading Techniques in Finite Element Analysis of Underground Structures

Stability of underground structures is assessed by comparing rock strength with induced stresses resulted from ground stresses. Rock mass surrounding the opening may fail either by fracture or excessive deformation caused. Accurate calculation of induced stresses is therefore fundamental in the stability analysis of an opening. Although numerical methods, particularly finite element method, are...

A Study of Waveguides with Sections of Proportional Sizes: Application to Wave Radiation

Classically, waveguides are structures with uniform sections or are periodic along an axis. Vibrations of these waveguides can be described by wave modes and propagation constants relating the displacements and forces in two sections of the waveguide. Here, waveguides of non uniform sections are considered. More precisely, we consider waveguides which have sections with size increasing proporti...

Impact of Tamper Shape on the Efficiency and Vibrations Induced During Dynamic Compaction of Dry Sands by 3D Finite Element Modeling

Dynamic compaction is a soil improvement method which has been widely used for the increase of bearing capacity through stress wave propagation during heavy tamping. The cost and time of project implementation can be effectively curtailed by developing a model that can be used in the design of dynamic compaction operations. The numerical models offered so far are mostly one or two-dimensional, ...

A recursive approach for the finite element computation of waveguides

The finite element computation of structures such as waveguides can lead to heavy computations when the length of the structure is large compared to the wavelength. Such waveguides can in fact be seen as one-dimensional periodic structures. In this paper a simple recursive method is presented to compute the global dynamic stiffness matrix of finite periodic structures. This allows to get freque...
